Making Christmas Presents

I’ve been making wood bowls for a while now and wanted to learn something new. With Christmas coming up, I thought it would be fun to try my hand at making cutting boards. I’ve also had an idea for a sign I wanted to make for my brother for a while.

Cutting Boards

Let’s start off with the cutting boards. It starts with Ash and Walnut. After ripping those to strips, you glue them together. Then you run that assembly through our friend Mr. planer and then cut strips of THAT on the table saw. Flip those strips, add more Ash and you’re almost there!

After you’ve done that, make another trip to Mr. Planer to get a flat surface. Trim the excess off with the table saw and make a nice edge with the router. Finally, the mineral oil tops it off.

Drew’s Present

Using the guise of generous giving is a great excuse to play with cool power tools…..like a FRIKEN LASER. I’ve had the idea to make Drew a wood picture/collage/mural thing for a while and after learning how to use the laser cutter at the workshop I belong to in Oakland, decided to give it a go.

The Finished Product- it’s four layers of plywood with some paint in a frame I also made
