Never satisfied with something that isn’t hand-made, Maureen and I decided to make a TV cabinet for our apartment in Alameda. It was a great experience to go through the process, learn about woodworking and how we work together.
We got some wide pine planks from Home Depot, ran them through a joiner and glued them together. This is Maureen strutting her stuff around the wood shop ripping and sanding.
The pine definitely took more work to get a good finish from but considering this was our first piece of furniture, we didn’t want to splurge on cabinet grade plywood.
After that, we build a frame out of 2X3’s to hold the pine panels together.

Staining. Here’s where we started to question our decision of using pine rather than a hardwood. This is what it looked like after sanding to 320, a coat of sanding sealer and one coat of stain. Not exactly museum quality piece:

Luckliy we just kept putting more and more stain on along with some polyurethane. The end result was pretty good!
Finally the doors needed to be installed. We got an aluminum bar from Home Depot, mounted it across the front with spacers and hung some pulleys we got from Etsy which hold the doors we made. It slides surprisingly well and finishes off the cabinet nicely.
